How to Care for Your Coconut Bowls

Why Proper Care Matters

Coconut bowls are a beautiful, natural alternative to conventional tableware, but like all natural materials, they need a little love to stay in top condition. With the right care, your Koko Loko coconut bowl will last for years and only get more characterful with time.

Daily Cleaning

After each use, rinse your coconut bowl with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Use a soft cloth or sponge and avoid abrasive scrubbers that can scratch the surface. Never soak your bowl in water, as prolonged exposure can cause the shell to crack or warp.

Drying

Always dry your coconut bowl immediately after washing. Pat it dry with a clean towel and leave it upright in a well-ventilated spot to air dry fully before storing. Avoid leaving it face-down on a damp surface.

Conditioning with Coconut Oil

To keep your bowl looking rich and nourished, condition it with a small amount of coconut oil every few weeks, or whenever it starts to look dry or dull. Simply rub a thin layer of oil into the surface using a soft cloth, let it absorb for a few minutes, then buff off any excess. This keeps the shell supple and enhances its natural lustre.

What to Avoid

  • Dishwasher: Never put your coconut bowl in the dishwasher. The heat and prolonged water exposure will damage it.
  • Microwave: Coconut shells are not microwave-safe.
  • Harsh chemicals: Bleach and strong detergents will strip the natural oils from the shell.
  • Direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading and cracking.

Storage

Store your coconut bowls in a cool, dry place away from direct heat sources. Stacking them is fine, just make sure they're fully dry before doing so to prevent moisture build-up.

A Bowl That Gets Better with Age

With a little care, your coconut bowl develops a beautiful patina over time. Each mark and grain tells the story of its natural origin, making it truly one of a kind. Treat it well, and it'll be a staple of your table for years to come.
